UKSE Helps School Get Ready To Play

UKSE Helps School Get Ready To Play

Hundreds of children in Saltburn are enjoying a brand new outdoor play area at their school, thanks to help from UK Steel Enterprise’s Community Support Fund.

More than 450 children and their families use the facilities at Saltburn Primary School which is the only school in the town.  The Parents and Friends Association (PFA) has been trying to raise money for some time to provide play and fitness equipment for the older children to enjoy, boost their levels of physical activity and improve their health.

Now, thanks to a grant of £2,500 from UK Steel Enterprise, the Tata Steel regeneration subsidiary, backing from the Middlesbrough & Teesside Philanthropic Foundation, Saltburn Primary School itself and the money raised from PFA discos and other events, the new playground is ready for use.

Kath Dowson, Co-Chair of the PFA, said: “The PFA has been fund- raising for quite some time but once you have support from organisations like UK Steel Enterprise you can really move the project ahead. They responded so quickly to our request and everyone is very grateful for their help.”

The new play area, which includes a trim trail, small climbing wall, balance beams and story chair complete with mushrooms as well as all-weather-safety flooring, will also be used for community events such as sports days and summer fairs.

“The children just had mobile equipment such as basketball nets and skipping ropes to take into the playground,” said Kath Dowson.  “Now they have this wonderful fixed equipment in a field right next to the playground that will make a real contribution to the curriculum and help to keep them fit and healthy.

“The excitement around the school is huge,” she added.

Simon Hamilton, Regional Manager for UK Steel Enterprise, said: “We started our special Fund to support community projects exactly like this one and help to improve the quality of life for people living in steel areas. We hope the children and the community in Saltburn will enjoy using it for many years.”
